Cambodian Premier League kicks off on March 5

PHNOM PENH:  Cambodian League, now known as the Cambodian Premier League (CPL), will kick off next month.

2022 Cambodian Premier League is the 36th season of the Cambodian Premier League. Contested by 8 clubs, it operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the Cambodian League 2. Due to the new policies and regulations implemented by the newly established Cambodian Football League Company, there will be only eight teams competing this season in a triple round-robin match.

Satoshi Saito, CEO of CPL, announced during a media conference that the 2022 Season of Cambodia’s top football league will start on March 5 with eight teams on board.

The CPL unveiled its new logo and conducted the draw for the 2022 Season during the same gathering, which was held at the Emion Hotel in Phnom Penh.

The eight CPL clubs that will play in the upcoming season are Phnom Penh Crown FC, Boeung Ket FC, Angkor Tiger FC, Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng FC, Kirivong Sok Sen Chey FC, Visakha FC, Tiffy Army FC and NagaWorld FC.

The past seasons usually involve 13 clubs. The five clubs (Soltilo Angkor FC, Prey Veng FC, National Police Commissary FC, Asia Euro United FC and Electricite du Cambodge FC) that did not make it to the CPL this year will likely play in the Cambodian Second League.

“We will start on March 5 and are planning to finish it by the end of November,” Saito said. “Anything can happen with Covid. We want to be flexible.”

The newly-revamped CPL will follow a triple round-robin format. “Each of the teams will play 21 games,” the CPL CEO pointed out.

During the event, team representatives discussed their expectations and plans, while voicing their support to the CPL. In the last few weeks, there has been some outside “rumblings” about the way the CPL is reforming Cambodian football.

General Sao Sokha, president of Football Federation of Cambodia, echoed Saito’s observations and hopes for the CPL.

“This a new era for Cambodian football. Looking at leading football nations around the world, having a high-quality professional league will contribute to the success of the national team and strengthen the football ecosystem,” he said during the launching of the new company.

Japan Ambassador to Cambodia Masahiro Mikami, according to Saito, is helping them enlist Japanese companies as sponsors.
